RXS sheet metal screw in A4 / AISI 316 acid-proof stainless steel is built to resist corrosion and maintain strength over a long period. The pan head provides a neat and discreet finish while offering a good bearing surface. The screw combines high strength with wear resistance and is optimized to withstand heavy mechanical loads and frequent use.

FIELD OF APPLICATION

Perfect for fastening sheet metal, fittings, and equipment in marine environments, coastal constructions, piers, boats, the food industry, and chemical plants. The self-tapping thread provides a stable and vibration-resistant connection in pre-drilled holes. Easy to install with a Phillips bit or screwdriver (PH) and requires minimal maintenance even during continuous operation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

What does RXS mean and what is the advantage of a pan head?

RXS denotes a sheet metal screw with a pan head (rounded top with a flat underside):

  • Wide and flat bearing surface: The flat underside of the pan head effectively distributes the clamping force against the sheet metal or material without cutting in or countersinking the hole.

  • Neat and discreet finish: The rounded top provides a smooth and aesthetically pleasing profile on visible surfaces where the screw head remains on top of the material.

  • Thread design for thin materials: The thread is designed to form or cut its own threads in pre-drilled holes in sheet metal, plastic, fiberglass, or wood.

Why is acid-proof stainless steel A4 (AISI 316) crucial for sheet metal screws outdoors and at sea?

When screwing in tough environments, the sheet metal screw's threads are exposed to high friction against the substrate, causing simpler surface treatments to wear off immediately:

  • Molybdenum alloy against chlorides: A4 steel (1.4401 / AISI 316) contains 2–3 % molybdenum. This provides complete corrosion protection against saltwater, road salt, industrial exhaust, and harsh weather (Corrosivity class C4/C5).

  • No coating to flake off: Since the screw is alloyed throughout, no rust occurs if the thread is scratched during installation – unlike electro-galvanized (FZB) sheet metal screws.

  • Wide application: Ideal for marine environments, boat hulls, exterior sheet metal assemblies, fan and ventilation installations, and the chemical industry.

How do you best install and pre-drill for RXS sheet metal screws?

  1. Correct drill diameter for pre-drilling: Stainless A4 steel cannot be hardened in the same way as carbon steel. Therefore, always pre-drill with the correct drill diameter adapted to the sheet thickness and screw diameter. If the hole is too tight, the screw risks snapping during tightening.

  2. Combine with rubber seal if needed: When installing outdoors on metal roofs or boat decks, the RXS screw can advantageously be combined with an EPDM washer (sealing washer) under the head to create a completely waterproof fastening.

  3. Use the right bit and low speed: Ensure you use a fresh bit that fits the screw drive perfectly and tighten at a controlled speed to avoid overheating and stripped threads.
