This pad eye, also known as a lashing eye, is manufactured from A2 (AISI 304) stainless steel and features an oval base plate. The stainless steel provides long-term durability and good resistance to corrosion in indoor and normal outdoor environments. The mount consists of a sturdy loop and a base plate.

AREA OF APPLICATION

The pad eye is used to create a secure anchor point when lashing cargo, cargo nets, and straps in transport, construction, and industrial environments. It is well-suited for outdoor and humid environments. For saltwater and marine environments, acid-resistant A4 steel is recommended. The benefits of using a stainless steel pad eye include high load capacity, easy installation, and long service life, even in exposed environments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

What is the benefit of an oval base plate on a pad eye?

The oval base plate combines compact external dimensions with a smooth, aerodynamic, and rounded aesthetic:

  • No sharp corners: Unlike rectangular or rhombic plates, the oval shape has no sharp edges. This reduces the risk of rope, lines, clothing, or equipment catching or chafing against the corners of the plate.

  • Easy installation on narrow surfaces: The elongated shape makes the mount ideal for installation along narrow beams, posts, pipe flanges, or deck trim where width is limited.

  • Even tension distribution: The oval contour distributes the load smoothly across the substrate without creating point-concentrated stress on the mounting surface.

Why is A2 (AISI 304) stainless steel suitable for lashing and anchoring?

A2 stainless steel (1.4301 / AISI 304) provides excellent corrosion protection and high mechanical strength for the vast majority of installations:

  • Weather and moisture resistant: Withstands continuous outdoor exposure, rain, snow, and damp areas without suffering from surface rust or weakening at the weld between the loop and the base.

  • Handles dynamic jerks: Austenitic stainless steel has high fracture toughness, which allows the pad eye to withstand sudden jerks from straps and ropes during cargo securing or suspension.

  • Versatile applications: Popular for anchoring in vehicle transport, trailers, workshops, control systems, and for lighter marine applications in freshwater or above deck.

How do you install the pad eye for the most secure attachment possible?

  1. Use countersunk screws: The holes in the base plate are chamfered for countersunk screws (e.g., countersunk wood screws or DIN 7991 A2 countersunk machine screws). This ensures that the screw heads sit flush with the plate and do not damage whatever is attached to the loop.

  2. Through-bolt for higher loads: For heavy loads in thin plywood, plastic, or sheet metal, it is recommended to use through-bolts with large washers (DIN 9021 A2) and lock nuts (DIN 985 A2) on the backside instead of wood screws.

  3. Alignment: Orient the long side of the oval in the direction of the main pull to utilize the mechanical strength of the mount in the most effective way.
