Lock nut | A2 | DIN 982
Do you need a lock nut that works reliably even in damp outdoor environments? Lock nut A2 DIN 982 in A2 / AISI 304 stainless steel with a nylon insert is built to withstand corrosion and maintain strength over a long period. The nylon insert creates a constant frictional resistance that prevents the nut from loosening due to vibrations and mechanical stress, while still being easy to install with a standard wrench.
AREA OF APPLICATION
Perfect for fastenings in construction, machinery, furniture, vehicles, and outdoor structures. The nylon insert provides a vibration-proof and durable connection without the need for additional fittings. The lock nut requires minimal maintenance even during continuous operation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
What characterizes the DIN 982 lock nut and how does it differ from the low-profile DIN 985 model?
DIN 982 is the tall model of nyloc nut (lock nut with a nylon ring):
-
Higher nut body (high profile): DIN 982 has more thread turns integrated into the nut body compared to the standard DIN 985 model. This provides higher shear strength and better distribution of axial tensile load.
-
Deeper seat for the nylon insert: The nylon ring sits extra securely and provides maximum and long-lasting frictional resistance against vibrations.
-
Perfect for high loads: Suitable for mechanically demanding structures exposed to both high tensile force and cyclic vibrations.
How does the nylon insert work and what is important during installation?
- Friction locking: When the bolt is threaded through the nut, the bolt's thread forms a corresponding groove in the elastic nylon ring. This creates a constant radial pressure that locks the joint without damaging the metal threads of the bolt.
- Protrusion required: The bolt thread must go all the way through the nylon ring and protrude at least 2–3 threads above the top of the nut to ensure full locking effect.
- Lubricate the thread (against cold welding): When installing stainless A2 nuts on stainless bolts, there is always a risk of seizing/cold welding (galling). Use a drop of assembly paste or grease on the thread and avoid tightening with excessive RPM on an impact driver.
Can A2 steel handle salty and chemical environments, or when is acid-resistant A4 needed?
-
Stainless A2 (AISI 304): Works perfectly in standard outdoor environments, garden structures, outdoor furniture, and buildings where the nut is exposed to rain, snow, and moisture (Corrosivity class C3).
-
Why not salty/chemical environments? Chlorides in salt water, road salt, and strong acids break down the chromium-based passive layer in A2 steel, which leads to pitting corrosion.
-
Choose A4 for marine environments: For docks, boats, pools, road salt areas, and the chemical industry, you should instead choose acid-resistant steel A4 (AISI 316).
