A 2-hole cleat made of acid-proof stainless steel A4 is a robust and reliable component for mooring boats and securing lines, ropes, and hawsers. It is manufactured from high-quality acid-proof stainless steel to provide maximum durability and resistance to corrosion, even during prolonged exposure in demanding marine and industrial environments. Sold individually.

AREA OF APPLICATION

The cleat is used on boat decks, piers, and quays for belaying mooring lines, fender lines, and other ropes. It is also suitable for securing ropes and hawsers in industrial and marine environments. The cleat is mounted using through-bolts in the two holes in the base plate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

What is the difference between a cleat and a bollard when mooring?

Although the terms are often used synonymously in everyday language, there is a functional difference in how the line is secured:

  • Cleat: Has two protruding horizontal horns designed so that you can quickly tie a figure-eight knot and finish with a hitch. This makes it easy to adjust and belay the mooring line by hand.

  • Bollard: Has a more vertical, sturdy post (often with one or two crossbars) that is built to withstand high axial tensile forces from heavier hawsers and storm moorings.

Why is acid-proof stainless steel A4 (AISI 316) a must for cleats and bollards?

Cleats and bollards are among the most exposed fittings on board or on the pier:

  • Continuous saltwater exposure: A4 steel (1.4401 / AISI 316) is alloyed with molybdenum, which provides complete protection against crevice and pitting corrosion from spray, sea salt, and humid marine environments.

  • High fatigue strength: When the boat moves in waves, strong, repetitive jerks are created in the mooring. The high toughness of A4 steel prevents cracking in the material and weld joints.

  • No rust stains on deck or pier: Leaves no unsightly rust stains on the boat’s gelcoat, teak deck, or pier timber.

How do you mount a cleat or bollard to withstand heavy storm loads?

Mooring fittings are never stronger than their attachment to the surface. Follow these three steps for secure installation:

  1. Through-bolting: Always mount with through-bolted acid-proof machine screws (e.g., DIN 603 carriage bolts or DIN 912/7991 A4 screws) instead of standard wood screws when the cleat will be taking on mooring forces.

  2. Use a backing plate / large fender washer: On fiberglass hulls, decks, or plywood, always use a stainless backing plate or large fender washers (DIN 9021 A4) and lock nuts (DIN 985 A4) on the underside to distribute the tensile force over a larger surface area.

  3. Watertight sealing: Apply marine sealant (e.g., MS polymer or polyurethane) in the screw holes and under the cleat's base plate to prevent moisture migration into the deck core or pier timber.
