Using bolts in wood

When using bolts in wood, it is important to drill the holes in a way that provides a tight fit, with a maximum tolerance of 1 mm.

The bolts should be at least 10 mm thick, and for timber thicknesses exceeding 80 mm, they should be at least 12 mm thick to ensure sufficient strength. The distance between the bolts should be at least 100 mm, and the direction should be from the end of the timber along the grain to optimize stability. It is also essential to place washers on the nut side of the working surface to ensure proper assembly.

Table: Sizing of load-bearing bolts.

Bolt Washer, thickness (mm) Round washer (mm) Square washer (mm)
M 12 6 58 50
M 16 6 68 60
M 20 8 80 70
M 22 8 92 80
M 24 8 105 95
