It acts as a pivot pin in clevis joints and linkage systems, allowing mobility in the joint without wear occurring on thread flanks. Instead of a threaded nut, the clevis pin is secured quickly and securely with a cotter pin, R-clip, or split ring.

How is the clevis pin correctly secured against axial displacement?

To prevent the pin from sliding out of its position, a suitable locking pin (e.g., cotter pin or split ring in A4 stainless steel) is inserted through the cross-hole at the end of the pin.

For permanent installations: Use a cotter pin whose legs are bent outwards after installation.

For frequent dismantling: An R-clip or split ring is advantageously used, which can be easily removed without tools.

Why is acid-proof A4 / AISI 316 crucial for clevis pins in marine and industrial environments?

Clevis pins are often subjected to high shear forces while being located in crevice-like spaces inside fork fittings and turnbuckles. Acid-proof A4 steel (AISI 316 / 1.4401) contains molybdenum, which provides maximum protection against crevice and pitting corrosion that can otherwise quickly occur in damp, salty, or chemically aggressive environments. This ensures that the pin retains its load-bearing capacity and does not seize during maintenance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7864/1494/files/riggbult-rostfritt-A4_d3fa759e-dff1-4a89-b47b-aa33365ae270.jpg?v=1785841161
